ROMEO & JULIET by Mikulas Kravjansky is an intaglio triptych that was published in an edition of only 95.  The size of each panel is 30″ X 22″. It is pencil signed and numbered by the artist. The condition is mint and it has not been framed or mounted. The artist has signed and dated all three panels which may be framed separately or in one large frame.

The beautiful high quality prints of Mikulas Kravjansky are created by the old master technique of Intaglio on hand made paper with heavy embossing and metallic inlays. Those who buy for beauty are assured profit through the pleasure of ownership.

These are truly works of a master. Each piece is entirely hand made and thus each piece within the edition is unique.

Note the picture of a mural painted by Kravjansky on a building in downtown Napa CA depicting scenes and images from the turn of the century (circa 1900). Also shown is a picture of the artst painting.

HAND MADE INTAGLIO PRINTS BY KRAVJANSKY

Mikulas Kravjansky excels in the artistic printing technique known as intaglio. This includes etching, engraving, dry point, aquatint, mezzotint, linocut, wood block and collograph.

In this complex process the image is created by the artist on a plate of copper, aluminum, plastic or other material by adding to, or subtracting from, the surface of the plate. All ink colors are applied to the plate and a sheet of wet hand made paper placed on it. This is covered with felt and run through steel rollers of an etching press. As water is squeezed from the paper, suction draws the ink into the paper.

This hand procedure is repeated for each piece of the edition. After drying for a week, Kravjansky may add hand painting or laminate metallic inlays to the work. His editions are small as these plates will only print a limited quantity before wearing out, after which he destroys the plates.

Mikulas speaks about these pieces

“Surely one of Shakespeare’s best loved and popular plays, Romeo and Juliet is practically synonymous with the writer himself. The universal appeal of the play no doubt stems from its timeless theme of the blind persistence of innocent love. What the heart commands cannot be denied and young Romeo and Juliet, therefor, are truly heroic in stature, compelling the reader to examine his or her own experiences and motivation behind life’s major decisions. That Romeo and Juliet end their lives in tragedy does not detract from the fundamental truth that love conquers all and that youth must rise over the prejudices and moral pettiness of previous generations.”

“I have incorporated some of the well-known images from the play in my work; the famous balcony scene, the ball at which Romeo and Juliet first meet and the flight in the Town Square which dramatizes the feuding between the Montagues and Capulets which seeks to keep the star-crossed lovers apart. Central to my work, of course, are Romeo and Juliet themselves, the lovers. Their innocence and courage are ultimately the shinning light that all too late shocks their families into ending a senseless feud.”

“My lifelong love of the theater was my inspiration for this work and others in my Shakespearean suite. I hope that all the work brings to you the same mystic, love and excitement.” – {Mikulas Kravjansky 1987}

Mikulas Kravjansky was born in Czechoslovakia in 1928 where he attended the Academy of Arts in Bratislava. He became one of the foremost set and costume designers in the Czechoslovakian theater and state television. In 1968, he and his family immigrated to Canada where he became Assistant Master of Art at Toronto’s Humber College.

He is listed in Who’s who in the World, Who’s Who in American Art, The Printworld Directory and Scenography Throughout the World.
